What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students recognize that people can buy goods and services with money or trade for them. They tell what each person gives and receives.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly sort simple examples as buying, trading, giving, or borrowing. They can explain exchanges involving both goods and services.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every exchange uses money or that only objects can be exchanged. They may mistake gifts, sharing, or borrowing for an exchange with an agreed return.

How to Assess It

Read: “Lena pays $3 for bread. Tom walks Ana’s dog, and Ana fixes his bike.” Students label each exchange and name what each person gives.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up a classroom market with play money, item cards, and service cards, then have students buy or trade with classmates.

  2. Ask, “Would you rather pay for a haircut or trade a chore for it?” Have students explain their choice.

  3. Students sort scenario cards into four hoops labeled Buy, Trade, Gift, and Borrow, then explain one card to a partner.

  4. Compare a grocery receipt and a car wash price list, then identify the goods, services, and money exchanged.
