What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students sort everyday actions by whether someone makes or provides something, or buys and uses it. They explain how the same person can take both roles.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly labels a baker selling bread as a producer and buying shoes as a consumer. The student supports each label with details from the example.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think producers only work in factories or that consumers only buy food. They may also label a person with one role and miss that roles change with each action.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Maya bakes muffins to sell, then buys apples at a store. Name her role in each action and explain why.

Ways to Teach It
Set up a classroom market where students make paper bookmarks, sell them with play money, and buy a classmate’s product.
Ask students to write how a teacher can provide a service at school and buy a product after school.
Play a card sort relay using pictures of people cooking, repairing, shopping, teaching, farming, and visiting a doctor.
Have students list one product and one service their household buys, then name who provides each one.
