What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify when a person makes or provides a good or service and when a person buys or uses one. They sort everyday actions as producing or consuming.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a short scenario, students correctly label each producing and consuming action. They explain their choices and recognize that one person can do both.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think producers only work in factories or that consumers only shop in stores. They may not realize that people produce and consume services as well as goods.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Maya bakes bread and buys milk. Which action is producing, and which is consuming? Explain each answer.”
Lesson moves
Ways to Teach It
Give pairs clay and pretend coins. One student makes an item, another buys or uses it, then both label their actions.
Ask, “How can a cafeteria worker be both a producer and a consumer?” Students write two sentences and share their reasoning.
Read action cards aloud, such as cutting hair or eating lunch. Students hold up a P or C card and explain their choice.
Walk through the school and list people producing goods or services, then identify who consumes each one.
