What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how earthquakes, climate, and other physical processes affect where and how people live. They compare how people adapt to environments and how projects such as mines, irrigation systems, and roads change them.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can label an example as an environmental impact, a human adaptation, or a human modification. They can use evidence to explain benefits, costs, and effects on people and land.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse adapting to an environment with changing it. They may also name only the benefits of irrigation, mining, or roads while ignoring risks and environmental costs.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of farms using desert irrigation. Ask students to identify the physical challenge, explain the human response, and name one benefit and one cost.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups clay, water, and craft sticks to model a river valley, then build and test an irrigation system.

  2. Ask students to write which response to drought works best: migration, water limits, or irrigation, using two pieces of evidence.

  3. Play an impact, adaptation, or modification card sort using examples such as earthquakes, raised houses, mines, tunnels, and canals.

  4. Map how a nearby highway, dam, mine, or drainage system changed travel, jobs, water, or habitats in the community.
