What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name and describe landforms, bodies of water, natural resources, and weather in different places. They explain how location affects homes, clothing, food, and activities.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a photo or map, students point out physical features and describe them with accurate words. They connect a feature to daily life using a clear reason, such as wearing coats because the weather is cold.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call roads, houses, or parks physical features because they can see and touch them. They may confuse daily weather with landforms or assume people everywhere wear the same clothing and eat the same foods.
How to Assess It
- Display a picture of a snowy mountain community. Ask students to name two physical characteristics and draw one way people might dress, live, eat, or play there.

Ways to Teach It
Build mountain, desert, and coast models from clay, sand, and water, then add homes and clothing that fit each place.
Show two community photos and ask, "How does the land or weather change what people wear, eat, build, or do?"
Sort picture cards into landforms, water, resources, and weather, then match each place with suitable shelter, clothing, food, or activities.
Track local weather for five days, then chart how it changes students' clothing and outdoor activities.
