What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how people change land and water to meet their needs. They connect those changes to helpful and harmful results. They also name actions that save resources or help replace them.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can compare a place before and after people changed it. They can name one result of the change and suggest a realistic way to protect or replace a resource.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every environmental change is harmful or that natural events are human modifications. They may also confuse conserving a resource with never using it at all.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of a farm, road, or oil well. Ask students to write how people changed the environment, one consequence, and one conservation action.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a model landscape with soil, foil water, blocks, and craft sticks, then add a road and discuss what changes.

  2. Use the prompt, “Should people build a road through a wooded area?” and have students support their answer with one consequence.

  3. Play a card sorting relay with examples labeled human change, consequence, conserve, or replenish.

  4. Take a schoolyard walk, list resources people use, and choose one action the class can take to reduce waste.
