What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name actions that use fewer natural resources, such as saving water, paper, and electricity. They also name actions that replace resources, such as planting trees and restoring soil.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can sort pictures of actions into saving resources, replacing resources, or neither. They can explain how each helpful action protects a specific resource.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think putting trash in any bin counts as recycling. They may believe resources return quickly after use. They may confuse cleaning an area with replacing what was removed.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket showing a dripping faucet and a child planting a tree. Ask students to name each action and explain which resource it helps.

Have students plant bean seeds in reused cups, then make reminder signs for saving water while caring for them.
Ask students to write: Which classroom resource do we waste most, and what could we do differently?
Play Resource Rescue by having teams sort action cards into save, replace, or waste piles.
Conduct a classroom check of lights, faucets, and paper use, then choose one change the class can make this week.
