What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students sort natural parts of a place, including hills, rivers, soil, rocks, and weather, from things people make or do. They use location clues to explain choices about homes, clothing, food, and activities.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a picture, students correctly name natural features and describe the weather. They choose a reasonable home, outfit, food, or activity for that place and explain why it fits.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call roads, houses, or playgrounds natural features. They may confuse a lake with an ocean or weather with a landform. They may think location forces everyone to make the same choices.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a snowy mountain town. Ask students to name two natural features and choose suitable clothing or an activity, then explain their choice.

Ways to Teach It
Use sand, clay, foil, and a shallow water tray to build a place, then add a shelter suited to its land and weather.
Show a beach and a snowy town, then ask, “What would you wear, eat, build, and do in each place?”
Play Picture Match: students pair nature cards with shelter, clothing, food, or activity cards and explain each match.
Take a schoolyard walk to spot sun, wind, soil, water, shade, buildings, clothing, and activities, then discuss location choices.
