What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students sort natural parts of a place, including hills, rivers, soil, rocks, and weather, from things people make or do. They use location clues to explain choices about homes, clothing, food, and activities.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a picture, students correctly name natural features and describe the weather. They choose a reasonable home, outfit, food, or activity for that place and explain why it fits.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call roads, houses, or playgrounds natural features. They may confuse a lake with an ocean or weather with a landform. They may think location forces everyone to make the same choices.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of a snowy mountain town. Ask students to name two natural features and choose suitable clothing or an activity, then explain their choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use sand, clay, foil, and a shallow water tray to build a place, then add a shelter suited to its land and weather.

  2. Show a beach and a snowy town, then ask, “What would you wear, eat, build, and do in each place?”

  3. Play Picture Match: students pair nature cards with shelter, clothing, food, or activity cards and explain each match.

  4. Take a schoolyard walk to spot sun, wind, soil, water, shade, buildings, clothing, and activities, then discuss location choices.
