What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students describe where they and classroom objects are using words such as beside, behind, above, below, near, and far. They use north, south, east, and west to locate places.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students give clear directions from one school location to another using accurate spatial words. They identify all four cardinal directions on a simple classroom or school map.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse left and right with east and west, which do not change when a person turns. They may also reverse north and south or describe an object without naming a reference point.

How to Assess It

Give students a simple classroom map and ask, “What is north of the teacher’s desk, and where is the door compared with the rug?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place a toy in different classroom spots, then have students describe its location using a named object as the reference point.

  2. Ask students to write two sentences explaining where their seat is compared with the door and the teacher’s desk.

  3. Play Cardinal Direction Simon Says, with students stepping north, south, east, or west on a taped floor compass.

  4. Study a school map and plan a route from the classroom to the cafeteria using direction and location words.
