What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read a simple map and use north, south, east, and west to describe where one place is from another. They follow directional clues to find locations.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can use a compass rose correctly without mixing up the directions. Given two places on a map, the student can tell which direction one is from the other.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse east and west or think north always means moving forward. They may name a direction based on their own body instead of the compass rose.
How to Assess It
- Give students a simple map with a school, park, library, and pond. Ask, “Which direction is the park from the school?”

Ways to Teach It
Place direction cards on classroom walls, then have students follow three-step routes such as north, east, and south.
Show two places on a map and ask students to write, “The library is ___ of the park.”
Play Cardinal Direction Simon Says, using commands such as “Take one step west” or “Point north.”
Use a neighborhood map to describe which direction familiar places, such as a grocery store or playground, are from the school.
