What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify familiar campus places, such as the library, cafeteria, office, and playground. They use words like near, far, beside, between, across from, and behind to explain where each place is.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can point to a campus location on a simple map or during a walk. The student can describe its position using a clear reference point and an accurate location word.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse left and right or mix up in front of and behind. They may name a place without telling where it is compared with another place.
How to Assess It
- Show a simple campus map and ask, “Where is the library compared with the office?” Have each student answer using one location word.

Ways to Teach It
Take a campus walk and have students place labeled sticky notes on a simple map after visiting each location.
Show two campus photos and ask, “Where is the cafeteria compared with the playground?” Students answer in a complete sentence.
Play Campus Clue Hunt by reading location clues while students point to or cover the matching place on a map.
Ask the school secretary to explain how location words help visitors find the nurse, office, cafeteria, or restroom.
