What Students Need to Do: Students tell where people and objects are by using words such as beside, between, above, below, behind, and in front of. They use a clear reference point, such as the desk or classroom door.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can accurately describe an object's position from a stated viewpoint. The student can also follow spoken directions that use location words.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse left and right or above and below. They may name a position without a reference point, or assume everyone sees left and right from the same viewpoint.
How to Assess It: Place a pencil under a chair and a book beside the chair. Ask, “Where is each object compared with the chair?”

Lesson moves

Give pairs a toy figure and classroom objects, then have one student place the figure while the other describes its position.
Ask, “Where is your seat compared with the classroom door?” and have students explain their answer to a partner.
Play Spatial Simon Says using directions such as stand behind your chair, move beside your desk, or place your hand above your head.
Walk to the library, then have students describe its location compared with the classroom, office, or cafeteria.
