What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students tell where one person or object is compared with another. They use location words accurately when speaking, drawing, or following directions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can place an object as directed and explain its position in a complete sentence. They correctly identify left and right from their own viewpoint.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often reverse left and right or change them based on which way another person faces. They may treat near and far as fixed places instead of comparisons.
How to Assess It
- Place a book, pencil, and cup on a table. Ask, "Tell where the pencil is using two different location words."

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a toy animal and cup, then have them take turns placing the animal and describing its location.
Show a classroom photo and ask, "Where is the trash can compared with the teacher's desk?"
Play Location Simon Says with commands such as, "Stand near your chair" or "Hold your hand over your head."
Walk through the school and have students describe where the office, cafeteria, and playground are compared with their classroom.
