What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students locate places on maps and globes using north, south, east, west, and directions such as northeast. They measure map distances using the given scale. They also read and make maps with clear labels, symbols, coordinates, and navigation tools.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can describe where a place is compared with their community and calculate its distance from another place. They can create a usable map and explain how each map feature helps the reader.

Common Misconceptions

Students often reverse east and west or confuse northeast with northwest. Some count grid squares as miles without checking the scale. Others confuse a legend with a scale or use symbols that are not explained.

How to Assess It

Give students a gridded town map where one square equals one mile. Ask them to locate the park, state its direction and distance from school, and add a title.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Students map the classroom on grid paper, adding a title, symbols, key, compass rose, scale, and labeled coordinates.

  2. Ask, “How would you guide a visitor from our school to the library?” Students write directions using north, southeast, and distance.

  3. Play Map Mission: partners draw destination cards, then name the direction, grid location, and scaled distance from the starting point.

  4. Use a local road map to plan a route from school to a park, then estimate distance with the map scale.
