What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students draw simple maps of familiar places and use symbols to show where things are. They find their community, Texas, and the United States on maps and globes.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can make a classroom map that places major features in roughly correct locations. Given local, state, and national maps, the student can identify the community, Texas, and the United States.

Common Misconceptions

Students may draw a side view instead of a view from above, or place objects by size rather than location. They may confuse Texas with the United States or expect their community to appear on every globe.

How to Assess It

Give each student a blank classroom outline and ask them to add the door, rug, and teacher table. Then have them point to Texas and the United States on a map or globe.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs blocks to model the classroom, then have them draw a top-view map with symbols for the door, desks, and rug.

  2. Show a map and globe, then ask students which tool they would use to find Texas and explain why.

  3. Play Find It Fast by naming the community, Texas, or United States while students point to each place on desk maps.

  4. Use a local park map to plan a route from the entrance to the playground, naming landmarks along the way.
