What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read titles, legends, and cardinal directions to find information on maps and globes. They also draw simple maps that show familiar places and routes.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students use a map title and legend to explain what the map shows. They follow or describe a route using north, south, east, and west, then create a clear map with useful symbols.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse east and west or treat north as always straight ahead. They may draw pictures instead of a map, omit the legend, or show places without a connected route.

How to Assess It

Give students a simple school map and ask them to trace a route from the classroom to the library. Have them name the directions traveled and explain one symbol using the legend.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a school map, colored counters, and direction cards to build and follow a route between two labeled places.

  2. Ask students to write three directions that guide a new student from the classroom to the cafeteria.

  3. Play Map Element Match by pairing title, legend, compass rose, and symbol cards with examples from classroom maps.

  4. Have students map a familiar route from home to a nearby park, store, or bus stop using symbols and a legend.
