What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find their local community and identify Texas as their state. They locate the United States on a globe and explain that Texas is part of the country.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students point to each place on an appropriate map or globe without guessing. They describe the nesting order: community inside Texas, and Texas inside the United States.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse a city, state, and country or think Texas is a country. They may expect a local community to appear on every map or globe.
How to Assess It
- Give students a local map, a U.S. map, and a globe. Ask them to point to their community, Texas, and the United States, then explain how the places fit together.
