What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use maps to find major cities, waterways, landmarks, regions, and nearby points of interest across Texas. They compare places using physical features and human features.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students accurately mark named places on a Texas map and describe where each is located. They compare two places with specific evidence about land, water, settlement, government, history, or culture.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse physical features, such as rivers and plains, with human features, such as cities and highways. They may also place cities in the wrong region or treat all Texas regions as physically and culturally alike.
How to Assess It
- On a blank Texas map, have students mark Austin and Galveston. Ask them to write one physical comparison and one human comparison.
