What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name major mountains, rivers, deserts, seas, and cities in different world regions. They place each feature in the correct area on a map and tell whether it is physical or human-made.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students accurately label well-known features on a blank map using continents, countries, and compass directions as clues. They distinguish natural features from cities and other built places.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse a continent with a country or place a city in the wrong country. They may mark a river as a single point, treat every named place as human-made, or mistake political borders for physical features.

How to Assess It

On an unlabeled world map, mark and label the Himalayas, Nile River, and Mexico City, then classify each as physical or human.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a blank world map and feature cards, then have them place and label the Andes, Nile, Sahara, Tokyo, and Amazon River.

  2. Ask students to explain how a river, mountain range, or nearby coast may affect where a major city grows.

  3. Play Map Relay, with teams racing to place labeled sticky notes on the correct locations of projected physical features and cities.

  4. Have students use a weather map and flight route map to identify physical features and urban centers along a planned trip.
