What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize how people reshape land and water to obtain resources, grow food, and move people or goods. They explain each change's purpose and its effects on people and nature.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a map, photo, or short case, students name the change and explain why it was made. They trace effects on the environment and communities using specific evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse adapting to an environment with physically changing it. They may describe only the intended purpose or assume every change is harmful, ignoring benefits and unintended effects.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “A canal carries river water to farms. Identify the environmental change, one benefit, and one possible negative effect.”

Ways to Teach It
Build a sand-tray landscape, add a road or irrigation channel, pour water, and record changes in runoff and erosion.
Ask students to write: “Should a highway cross a forest if it shortens travel time? Support your answer with two effects.”
Play a card sort matching mines, canals, dams, roads, and railways with their purposes, environmental effects, and community effects.
Examine a local highway, quarry, dam, or drainage channel on a map, then explain how it changed nearby land or water.
