What Students Need to Do: Students connect climate, landforms, water, and natural hazards to choices about homes, clothing, food, transportation, and work. They explain cause and effect and compare responses across regions.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a map, photo, or short case study, students identify the environmental challenge and the human response. They explain how that response helps people live in that location.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse adapting to an environment with changing the environment, such as mixing up warm clothing and building a dam. They may assume one environment always leads to one response or that technology removes all environmental limits.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Why are stilt houses common in flood-prone Bangladesh and thick-walled homes common in hot, dry Morocco? Explain how each design responds to local conditions.

Lesson moves

Give groups clay, foil, and straws to build a home for a floodplain, desert, or tundra, then label each adaptive feature.
Show photos of desert and Arctic communities, then ask students to write how climate affects housing, clothing, and transportation in each place.
Have students match environment cards with adaptation cards, then defend each match to a partner using a cause-and-effect sentence.
Walk around the school grounds and list features that help people handle heat, rain, wind, or limited water.
