What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize when people want more items or help than their money or resources allow. They explain why limits require choices. They give examples of family spending decisions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given several options and a fixed number of tokens, a student selects what to buy and explains the choice. The student names what could not be purchased.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think wanting something means a family can buy it, or that money never runs out. They may confuse goods with services or ignore the option not chosen.
How to Assess It
- Give students five pretend dollars and pictures of three items priced at $3 each. Ask them to choose one item and explain why they cannot buy all three.

Use a grocery ad to plan a family snack under $8, choosing goods and explaining why some items stay off the list.
