What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students sort everyday items into needs and wants. They explain how people get these items by buying, growing, making, sharing, or receiving them.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student correctly identifies food, clothing, and shelter as needs. The student explains why a toy is a want and names a realistic way people obtain each item.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call anything they strongly like a need, including toys or candy. They may think money is a basic need or that wants are always useless.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of a coat, house, apple, and toy. Ask students to label each need or want and explain how a family could get one item.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards of food, clothing, homes, toys, and treats to sort onto labeled need and want mats.
Ask, “What would a family need during a cold night, and what might they want?” Record answers with reasons.
Play Four Corners with signs for buy, grow, make, and receive, then name items for students to match with a method.
Use a grocery store flyer to circle needed foods and choose one wanted treat while staying within a pretend budget.
