What Students Need to Do

Students identify examples of getting money through work and using money for purchases, future needs, or helping others. They make a basic plan that divides a set amount between spending and saving.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly sort money choices as earning, spending, saving, or donating. They create a budget whose spending and saving amounts equal the money available.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call gifts or borrowed money earnings. They may treat saving as whatever remains after shopping or make a budget that uses more money than they have. Some think donating only means giving objects, not money.

How to Assess It

Give students $15 and ask them to make a two-part budget for spending and saving. They must label each amount and show that the total is $15.

   Give pairs $20 in play money and labeled envelopes, then have them divide the money among spending, saving, and donating.

   Ask students to write how earning money differs from receiving a gift, then share one example of each.

   Play a card sort where students place money scenarios under earning, spending, saving, or donating and explain two choices.

   Use a sample $10 weekly allowance to plan for a snack now and a book later.
