What Students Need to Do

Students sort physical items as goods and work people do as services. They explain how people buy, sell, or trade through places where buyers and sellers meet.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly classify examples from home, school, and the community. They can describe what is exchanged, how it is exchanged, and how a market connects buyers and sellers.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call every purchase a good, including a haircut or bus ride. They may think exchanges always require money or that a market can only be a grocery store.

How to Assess It

Give students a picture of a farmers market. Ask them to label one good, one service, the buyer, the seller, and what is exchanged.

   Set up a classroom market with play money, item cards, service cards, and assigned buyer and seller roles.

   Ask students to explain how getting a new pencil differs from having someone repair a broken pencil.
