What Students Need to Do: Students decide whether an example is an item people use or work someone does. They find examples in familiar places such as a kitchen, classroom, store, or neighborhood.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly label items such as pencils and groceries as goods. They label work such as teaching, haircuts, and bus rides as services and explain their choices.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call a worker, such as a doctor, a service instead of naming the work the doctor provides. They may also think goods must be expensive or services always produce an object.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Draw and label one good and one service you use at home, school, or in the community. Write “good” or “service” under each picture.

Lesson moves

Sort pencils, soap, books, and toys with picture cards showing teaching, haircuts, bus rides, and repairs onto goods and services mats.
Ask, “What did you use or have someone do for you before school?” and chart responses under goods and services.
Play Goods or Services Corners by reading examples such as backpack, doctor visit, lunchbox, and car wash, then having students move and explain.
Walk through the school, listing objects people can buy and jobs people do, then label each example as a good or service.
