What Students Need to Do: Students name authority figures at home, at school, and in the community. They explain what each person is responsible for and whom that responsibility helps.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly match people such as a parent, principal, teacher, police officer, and mayor with their duties. They can explain how those duties keep people safe, organized, or cared for.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every adult has authority in every setting or that authority only means giving orders and punishments. They may mix up roles, such as saying a mayor runs the school or a principal enforces city laws.
How to Assess It: Give students pictures of a parent, teacher, principal, police officer, and mayor. Ask them to choose two and state each person’s responsibility and setting.

Lesson moves

Have students sort picture and duty cards under three labels: home, school, and community.
Ask students to draw one authority figure and complete the sentence, “This person is responsible for...”
Play a matching game where students pair authority figure cards with responsibility cards, then explain each match.
Invite the principal or crossing guard to explain three daily responsibilities, then have students name who benefits from each one.
