What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students recognize tools and devices people use at home and at school. They name each item and tell where it is used.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given picture cards, a student sorts items into home, school, or both. The student correctly names examples and explains where people use them.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think technology means only computers, tablets, or phones. They may also think an item belongs in only one place, even when people use it in both.

How to Assess It

Show pictures of a refrigerator, classroom projector, dog, and tree. Ask students to circle the technology and say where each circled item is used.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out a remote control, electric pencil sharpener, tablet, and flashlight, then have pairs place them on Home, School, or Both mats.

  2. Show a photo of a kitchen and a classroom, then ask students to draw one technology item in each and explain its job.

  3. Play Technology Charades with cards showing a vacuum, computer, copier, and microwave; classmates name the item and where people use it.

  4. Take a school walk with clipboards, tally the technology students spot, and compare the list with tools they use at home.
