What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify tools people use for a particular job or need. They explain how each tool makes the task easier, faster, or safer.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can match tools such as a phone, shovel, or wheelchair to their uses. The student can explain the match in a complete sentence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think technology only means computers, tablets, or robots. They may name what a tool is without explaining how it helps someone complete a task.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of a flashlight and ask, “What need does this tool meet, and how does it help?” Have students answer orally or draw and label.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out a spoon, ruler, flashlight, and toy phone, then have students demonstrate a task each tool helps complete.

  2. Ask students to draw one tool used at home and finish the sentence, “This helps my family because…”

  3. Play a tool-and-task matching game with picture cards, then require partners to explain each match aloud.

  4. Take a school walk to spot tools used by the custodian, nurse, teacher, and office staff, then discuss the needs they meet.
