What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify needs such as food, water, shelter, clothing, and health. They explain how scientific knowledge and tools changed how people get or provide them.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students compare an older method with a newer one and describe the change. They give a clear cause and effect example, such as refrigeration keeping food safe longer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse needs with wants, naming video games or toys. They may list an invention without explaining its effect. Some assume older methods disappeared completely.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket showing a well, water filter, refrigerator, or tractor. Ask, “What need does this help meet, and how does it help?”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards of tools from different times, then have them sort each card under food, water, shelter, clothing, or health.
Ask students to write: “How did the refrigerator change the way families store food?”
Play a matching game where students pair tools, such as tractors and water filters, with the needs they help people meet.
Have students inspect one classroom or home tool and explain which need it supports and what people used before it.
