What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify things people need to live and things they would like to have. They explain that people can grow, make, buy, trade, share, or receive goods and services.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given picture cards, students correctly sort clear examples such as water, clothing, toys, and treats. They describe a realistic way someone could obtain each item.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call every strongly desired item a need. They may think buying is the only way to get something, overlooking making, growing, trading, sharing, and community help.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to draw one need and one want. Have them dictate or write how a person could get each one.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards and two hoops labeled Need and Want; students sort them, then explain how one item could be obtained.
Ask, "How could a family get dinner without buying a ready-made meal?" Record ideas such as growing, cooking, trading, or receiving help.
Play a matching game with item cards and method cards showing buying, growing, making, trading, sharing, and receiving a service.
Examine a carton of milk and map how farmers, truck drivers, and store workers help families get it.
