What Students Need to Do: Students identify food, clothing, and shelter as needs. They explain how families get these things by buying, making, growing, trading, or receiving help.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students match each need with a realistic family action. They can describe more than one way families may get food, clothing, or shelter.
Common Misconceptions: Students may label toys, candy, or video games as needs. They may think every family gets needed goods in the same way or only by buying them.
How to Assess It: Give students pictures of food, a coat, and a home. Ask them to name each need and tell one way a family could get it.

Lesson moves

Have pairs sort picture cards into food, clothing, shelter, and wants, then match each need with a family action.
Ask, "How might two families get food in different ways?" Have students draw one way and write a sentence.
Play Need Match by having students pair need cards with action cards such as grow, buy, sew, rent, or receive.
Use a grocery receipt, garden photo, coat, and rent notice to discuss how families obtain food, clothing, and shelter.
