What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify food, clothing, and shelter as needs. They explain how families get these things, then compare two families using words such as same and different.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given pictures or short stories about two families, a student can name the need being met. The student can state one similarity and one difference accurately.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse wants, such as toys, with needs. They may assume every family buys goods at the same stores or lives in the same kind of home.

How to Assess It

Show one family growing vegetables and another buying vegetables. Ask, “What need are both families meeting, and what is different about how they meet it?”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students sort picture cards showing gardens, grocery stores, coats, sewing, houses, and apartments under food, clothing, or shelter.

  2. Read two short family stories, then ask students to write one way the families are alike and one way they are different.

  3. Play a matching game where partners connect need cards to ways families meet them, then explain each match aloud.

  4. Trace a classroom snack from a store, garden, or kitchen, and discuss how it helps a family meet a food need.
