What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare how families completed daily tasks before and after particular tools were invented. They explain how a tool changed cooking, cleaning, travel, communication, or entertainment.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can match an older family task with a newer tool and name the change it caused. The explanation includes a clear effect, such as saving time or making communication faster.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think technology means only computers, phones, and robots. They may assume every family owns the same tools or that newer tools always make life better.
How to Assess It
- Show a washboard and a washing machine. Ask, “How did the washing machine change the way families wash clothes?”

Ways to Teach It
Have students sort picture cards of family tools into older and newer groups, then match tools used for the same task.
Ask students to draw one household task with and without a modern tool, then write a sentence explaining the difference.
Play Technology Match by pairing task cards, such as cooking or calling relatives, with tools that help families complete them.
Send home a question asking an adult which household tool changed their family routine, then share answers in class.
