What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify tools and inventions that changed how people share messages, travel, and spend free time. They explain what people did before and how the change made an activity faster, easier, safer, or different.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a telephone, automobile, or television, a student can tell how the related activity worked before and after it appeared. The student gives a clear cause-and-effect explanation rather than only naming the invention.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think technology means only computers and phones, or that every invention is recent. They may place each tool in only one group, even though television can support both communication and recreation.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of a telephone, train, and video game. Students choose one and complete: “Before this invention, people ___. After this invention, people ___, so ___.”

Ways to Teach It
Pairs sort picture cards of letters, telephones, horses, cars, hoops, and video games into past and present, then explain one change.
Ask, “Which invention changed daily life most: the telephone, car, or television?” Students choose one and give two reasons.
Play Change Match: students match an invention card to a before card and earn a point by explaining the effect.
Students ask a school staff member how travel, messages, or play differed in childhood, then share one change with the class.
