What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect doing a job with earning money. They explain how people choose to spend income on goods or services, or save it for later.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a simple story, students can trace work to income and then to a purchase or savings goal. They can explain what someone gives up when choosing one option.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think all money comes from gifts or that every kind of work is paid. They may confuse goods with services or think saving means never spending money.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Maya earns $10 walking a dog. Name one good and one service she could buy, then choose how much to save.”

Ways to Teach It
Give students job cards and play money, then have them choose among labeled goods, services, and a savings envelope.
Ask students to write: “If I earned $12, I would spend some on ___ and save some for ___ because ___.”
Play a matching game where students pair job cards with income, purchase choices, and possible savings goals.
Use a grocery ad to plan how to spend and save a pretend $20 earned from doing yard work.
