What Students Need to Do: Students identify situations where money, time, or supplies are limited. They make a choice and explain what they must give up.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can choose between two wanted items when both are not available. The student clearly names the item chosen and the item given up.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think wanting something means they should receive it. They may also believe choosing one item does not require giving up another.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “You have $3. A ball costs $3 and a puzzle costs $3. What will you choose, and what will you give up?”

Lesson moves

Give pairs three tokens and four classroom store cards, then have them buy items and name what they could not choose.
Ask, “If you can play one game before recess ends, which game will you choose, and what will you give up?”
Play Choice Corners by naming two options, having students move to one corner, and asking volunteers to explain their choice.
Show a school lunch menu with two main dishes and have students choose one while naming the meal they did not select.
