What Students Need to Do: Students recognize that people may want more goods, time, or experiences than they can get. They explain why a person must sometimes choose between wants.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can look at a simple situation and name the wants that cannot all be met. The student can describe the choice the person must make.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse wants with needs or think every want can be met later. They may also assume that wanting something strongly means they should get it.
How to Assess It: Show a child with $3 choosing between a $3 ball and a $3 book. Ask, “What does the child want, and why must the child choose?”

Lesson moves

Give pairs three play dollars and four priced picture cards, then have them select purchases and explain what they must leave behind.
Read a scenario about wanting two toys but affording one, then ask students to write or draw the choice they would make.
Play a choice game where students hold up one of two item cards when they cannot receive both.
Use a classroom party budget to choose between extra snacks, decorations, or small prizes, then discuss which wants remain unmet.
