What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name adults who make decisions and keep people safe at home, school, and in the community. They explain what local, state, and national officials do.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students match people such as a parent, principal, mayor, governor, and president to their responsibilities. They tell how each person helps a group and where that person serves.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every adult is a public official or that all leaders have the same job. They may confuse the mayor, governor, and president or place them at the wrong level.

How to Assess It

Give students pictures of a principal, mayor, governor, and president. Ask them to name each person’s job, responsibility, and area of service.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up home, school, city, state, and nation mats, then have students place leader cards on the correct mat.

  2. Ask students to complete the prompt, “A good leader helps people by...” and share one example with a partner.

  3. Play Who Am I by reading responsibility clues while students hold up cards for parent, principal, mayor, governor, or president.

  4. Invite a school principal or local official to explain three daily duties, then have students draw one way that person helps others.
