What Students Need to Do: Students name leaders such as the mayor, governor, and president. They tell which level each leader serves and describe a job that leader does.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can match each leader to the community, state, or nation. The student can explain one responsibility and recognize that leaders work with other people.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think the president controls city and state decisions. They may confuse public officials with community workers such as teachers, police officers, or firefighters.
How to Assess It: Give students three boxes labeled community, state, and nation. Have them place mayor, governor, and president in the correct boxes and write one job for each.

Lesson moves

Students sort mayor, governor, and president cards onto a community, state, and nation chart, then add picture cards showing their responsibilities.
Ask students to write: “Which leader should help with a city park, a state road, or national defense, and why?”
Play Leader Match: students draw a responsibility card, name the correct official, and place it under community, state, or nation.
Read short news headlines about a mayor, governor, and president, then identify the problem each official is addressing.
