What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students match officials such as the mayor, governor, and president to the level of government where they serve. They explain whether voters elect each official or another official appoints that person.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly name an official at each level and describe how that person gets the job. They use local examples and do not confuse election with appointment.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the president chooses governors or mayors, or that every government worker is elected. They may also place city council members, state legislators, or members of Congress at the wrong level.
How to Assess It
- Give students three titles: mayor, governor, and president. Ask them to label each government level and explain how each person is chosen.
