What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify which state or local leader handles a public issue. They find an official phone number, mailing address, email address, or online contact form and prepare a clear, respectful message.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can match an issue to an elected official or appointed leader. They can use an official government source, choose a suitable contact method, and explain what information to include.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think the governor handles city problems or that every government leader is elected. They may treat a social media comment as an official message or search for private contact information.
How to Assess It
- Give students two situations: broken city park equipment and a proposed state law. For each, have them name the leader to contact, choose an official contact method, and write the first sentence.
