What Students Need to Do
- Students name current leaders at the city, state, and national levels. They connect each person to the correct office and identify Texans who served as president.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly name the governor, mayor, state legislators, U.S. senators, and their U.S. representative. They sort each leader by level of government and explain that some representatives depend on home address.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse Texas senators with U.S. senators or assume every representative serves the whole state. They may also mix up the roles of mayor, governor, and president.
How to Assess It
- Give students six office labels and ask them to write the current leader for each, then name one Texan who served as president. Include one sentence explaining which leaders depend on where they live.
