What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain traits such as integrity, courage, cooperation, persistence, and sound judgment shown by Texas public officials. They support each trait with an action and distinguish elected roles from appointed roles.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given short profiles, students identify the leader, classify the role, and infer leadership qualities from evidence. They can describe Dwight D. Eisenhower, Lyndon B. Johnson, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush using specific actions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat popularity or charisma as proof of leadership and list traits without evidence. They may assume every public official is elected or every Texas president was born and raised in Texas.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Ann Richards won a statewide vote for governor and appointed more women and minorities to state posts; Oveta Culp Hobby was selected as a cabinet secretary and organized a new department. For each leader, label the role elected or appointed, name one leadership quality, and cite the supporting action.
