What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine the actions and decisions of national leaders from different time periods. They name leadership qualities and support each choice with specific evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can connect a quality such as courage, fairness, honesty, or perseverance to a leader’s actions. The student can compare two leaders and explain how each showed leadership.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume that holding office or being famous automatically makes someone a strong leader. They may list positive traits without evidence or judge a leader only by whether they agree with one decision.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose one past or present national leader. Name one leadership quality and describe one action that proves the leader showed it.

Give pairs action cards about George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and a current national leader, then have them sort cards by leadership quality.
Ask: Which matters more in a national leader, courage or fairness, and what action supports your view?

Have students analyze a recent presidential speech excerpt or official message, then highlight words that show responsibility, honesty, or perseverance.
