What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify actions people take as responsible citizens and explain how each action helps the community. They recognize that some duties, such as voting and jury service, are adult responsibilities.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can match a civic action to a community need and describe its effect. They can explain why following laws, volunteering, voting, and fair jury service support a community.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think laws only matter when an adult is watching or that volunteering is required by law. They may think children can vote, jurors decide cases alone, or voting only happens in presidential elections.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit ticket: Name one civic responsibility and write two sentences explaining how it helps the community.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs sort labeled scenario cards into obeying laws, community service, jury service, voting, or not a civic responsibility.
Ask students to write which civic responsibility has the greatest effect on their community and support their choice with one example.
Play civic responsibility bingo by reading scenarios while students cover the matching action on prepared bingo cards.
Show a photo of a local park problem, then have groups plan one specific action citizens could take to improve it.
