What Students Need to Do: Students recognize responsible citizen actions in short scenarios. They explain how following laws, researching issues, voting, and completing jury service support the community and representative government.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can sort a mixed set of civic behaviors into responsible and irresponsible actions. The student can justify each choice and describe a likely effect on the community.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think voting is legally required or open to everyone regardless of eligibility. They may treat one social media post as enough research or assume jury service is optional after receiving a lawful summons.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Circle every responsible action: comparing two sources about a school bond, skipping a jury summons, voting in a city election, and ignoring a posted park rule. Rewrite the two irresponsible choices.

Lesson moves

Give pairs eight civic scenario cards to sort into responsible and irresponsible actions, then require a one-sentence reason for each placement.
Ask students to write: Which citizen action has the greatest effect on a community, and what evidence supports your choice?
Play Civic Match: teams pair action cards with outcomes, such as jury service with a fair trial, and defend each match.
Use a local sample ballot and voter guide; students compare one issue summary and list two questions an informed voter should ask.
