What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students match the mayor, governor, and president to the community each serves: city, state, or nation. They explain how the jobs are alike and different using examples of responsibilities.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can place each official at the correct level of government and name one responsibility for each. The student can also describe one similarity and one difference between two officials.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may mix up which official serves a city, state, or nation. They may think the president is the boss of mayors and governors. Some assume each official makes laws alone.
How to Assess It
- Give students an exit ticket with three columns labeled city, state, and nation. Have them place each official, add one responsibility, and write one comparison.

Place city, state, and nation mats on the floor, then have students sort official and responsibility cards onto the correct mats.
Ask students to write which official they would contact about a city park, a state highway, and a national issue.
