What Students Need to Do
- Students examine models and explain what each represents well or poorly. They find patterns and possible errors in data, use calculations to compare results, and judge designs against clear criteria.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can cite numbers from a table or graph to support a claim. They can explain how a model's size, scale, properties, or materials affect its usefulness. They can rate a design using stated criteria and defend the rating with evidence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a model as an exact copy rather than a simplified representation. They may call any difference a pattern, ignore unusual data, or assume all errors are mistakes. They may choose a favorite design without checking each criterion.
How to Assess It
- Give students a small data table with one unusual result and two design sketches with stated criteria. Ask them to identify a pattern, calculate one comparison, flag the possible error, and select the stronger design with evidence.

Ways to Teach It
Build bridge models from index cards and foil, test each with pennies, record results, then compare material limits and design criteria.
Show a globe and a flat map, then ask students to write which features each represents well and which it distorts.
Play Data Detective with short tables, awarding points for naming a pattern, calculating a comparison, and spotting one likely measurement error.
Compare two reusable water bottles using cost, capacity, weight, and insulation data, then recommend one for a class field trip.
