What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students compare a model with the object or system it represents. They identify how size, scale, properties, and materials make the model useful or limit what it can show.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a globe, diagram, or toy, students name a specific advantage and limitation. They connect each point to the model’s purpose, size, scale, properties, or materials.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat a model as an exact copy. They may assume a larger model is always better or ignore differences caused by plastic, paper, or clay. Some call any difference a flaw rather than linking it to the model’s purpose.

How to Assess It

Show students a toy car beside a photograph of a real car. Ask them to name one advantage and two limitations related to size, properties, or materials.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a toy animal and photos of the real animal, then label useful features and limits caused by size and material.

  2. Prompt students to explain whether a globe or flat map better shows Earth, then name one limitation of their choice.

  3. Play Model Match with cards showing objects, models, and purposes, then require students to explain one advantage and one limitation for each match.

  4. Compare a weather map with conditions outside, then list what the map shows well and what it cannot show.
